The SEGUE Framework for Patient Interviews

Listen to a conversation between a doctor and a patient, Bobby Longnecker, who has been waiting in the examination room when Dr. Dolores knocks on the door. After listening, answer the following questions.

First Listening  
  1. Why did the patient come to see the doctor?
  2. What does the doctor examine?
  3. What is the doctor’s initial diagnosis?

Review the chart below with the SEGUE Framework for Communicating. Listen to the conversation again and take notes on each step of the interview process in the right column. Use the questions below to guide you. 

S:  What does the doctor do to make the patient feel more comfortable?

E:  How does the doctor find out the information she needs from the patient?

G:  What kind of information does the doctor give to the patient?

U:  What does the doctor do to show that she understands how the patient feels?

E:  How does the doctor end the interview?
